For many of us, the outdoors comes with a complicated history. The land has been a place of forced labor, danger, exclusion, and survival — not leisure, not rest, and definitely not the kind of recreation we now claim for ourselves. So when friends or family joke that “camping is just pretending to be homeless” or ask why we’d run in the woods on purpose, we get it. We really do.
